There’s stainless steel and then there’s SMO. If you’re working with saltwater, chlorides, or acidic fluids on a daily basis, you already know: standard alloys just don’t last. That’s why RSD supplies SMO Sheets – a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel made for the most corrosive conditions.
These aren’t everyday sheets. They’re built for desalination plants, pulp and paper mills, offshore platforms, and any system that constantly battles salt, acid, and stress.
With high levels of molybdenum, nitrogen, and chromium, SMO (UNS S31254) offers both durability and peace of mind.
What Makes SMO Special?
SMO 254 (S31254) was developed to resist pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking in environments that break down conventional stainless within months.
It delivers a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) above 42, making it one of the most corrosion-resistant stainless grades available today.
It also performs surprisingly well in high temperatures, under pressure, and even in aggressive oxidizing acids like nitric and sulfuric. It’s like putting armor on your process line.

Key Benefits of SMO Sheets
Top-Tier Chloride Resistance
Whether it’s seawater, brine, or process water with high chloride levels—SMO doesn’t flinch. It’s built for coastal, marine, and chemical environments where 316L or Duplex might start corroding.
High Strength & Ductility
Despite being corrosion-proof, SMO is still easy to bend, shape, and weld. It offers excellent mechanical strength, so you can reduce sheet thickness without compromising performance.
Thermal Resilience
SMO Sheets maintain their structure and corrosion resistance even at elevated temperatures, making them ideal for heat exchanger systems and evaporation plants.
Low Maintenance, High Reliability
Because SMO doesn’t corrode easily, it saves you on inspection, downtime, and costly replacements especially in 24/7 operations.
Where SMO Sheets Are Used
- Desalination Plants
Reverse osmosis systems, saltwater piping, and pressure vessels exposed to brine. - Pulp & Paper Industry
Bleaching systems and acidic chemical zones prone to rapid metal degradation. - Marine & Offshore Engineering
Shipbuilding, ballast tanks, and riser systems in contact with seawater. - Chemical Processing Plants
Acid reactors, scrubbers, and tanks exposed to aggressive, mixed chemical flows. - Water Treatment Plants
Systems handling chloride-rich process water, wastewater, or aggressive effluents.
